From Root Beer Stand to Drive-In Icon
Did you know that Sonic Drive-in actually started out as a small root beer stand? Before they were known for their toaster sandwiches, Sonic began its life as a root beer stand called Top Hat Drive-in in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Back in 1953, Troy Smith saw that drive-in restaurants were becoming more and more popular so he decided to capitalize on the trend. He saw an opportunity to give his customers a unique dining experience. Top Hat was known for their carhop service which means that customers could order food from the comfort of their cars and their meals would be delivered by carhops on roller skates. It became massively popular and the business started to grow.
Smith decided to expand and franchise the concept but there was one problem. The name “Top Hat” was already trademarked. So he needed a new name. He was inspired by their slogan, “Service with the Speed of Sound,” so Smith chose the new name: Sonic. Since then, Sonic has grown over the years and became a cultural icon. Today, we know them for their burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes, and their innovative limited-time offerings.

Texas Toast Takes Center Stage
Sonic’s latest menu additions, the Cheesy Bacon Sonic Stack and the Cheesy Bacon SuperSonic Stack, showcase Texas Toast as the star ingredient. Texas Toast is a thicker, richer version of regular toast, known for its buttery flavor and slightly crispy texture. By using Texas Toast instead of traditional buns, Sonic is adding a new dimension of flavor and texture to their classic cheeseburgers.
The Cheesy Bacon Sonic Stack features a single beef patty, crispy bacon, two slices of American cheese, and the usual burger toppings, all nestled between two slices of Texas Toast. For those with a bigger appetite, the Cheesy Bacon SuperSonic Stack doubles the beef patties and cheese, creating a truly satisfying burger experience. These limited-time offerings cater to customers’ love for both cheesy bacon burgers and the unique taste of Texas Toast.
Sonic’s decision to introduce these Texas Toast burgers aligns with current food trends, as many restaurants are experimenting with different types of bread and bread-adjacent options to enhance their sandwiches and burgers. It also demonstrates Sonic’s commitment to innovation and providing customers with exciting new flavor combinations.
