That daily coffee run you do from your local cafe might be one of the highlights of your day. But beneath that innocent coffee, there’s a hidden secret that your friendly barista won’t choose to tell you. We’re talking about surprising truths about your coffee beans and some science-backed hacks for a more flavorful coffee experience. Today, we’re spilling the beans to share with you the 8 secrets that your barista won’t tell you.

Enjoying your “fresh” coffee? It turns out they’re months old thanks to the mass-market effect. That coffee sits in warehouses long enough to lose its flavor before it even reaches your cup. To achieve that authentic peak taste, consider finding local roasters who roast to order. It just depends on the coffee shop on how long they’re going to let that coffee sit, as everyone has their own different way.

Each time you drink your coffee, remember to also protect your heart. Drinking coffee before noon actually cuts early death risk by 16% and heart disease by 31%. It’s the morning when anti-inflammatory effects are at their strongest, as they reach their peak when inflammation naturally occurs. Of course, they won’t tell you this so as not to destroy those afternoon and evening sales.

6. Light Roast Actually Packs More Caffeine

When you order a dark roast, it may seem stronger, but the truth is that the roasting process burns off some of the caffeine. With that, a light roast retains more of the good stuff if you want your coffee to have a stronger flavor. Want a bigger kick? Try the breakfast blend over your dark Italian and see the magic unfold.

5. “Extra Hot” Is Code for “Less Flavor”

Your barista may not tell you that “extra hot” is a code for no sweetness at all. Well, if you want to get the best flavors, ordering your cup for extra got might scorch the milk and kill the sweetness. Note that the ideal steaming temperature is 150-160°F to achieve a creamy texture. Overheating just makes everything taste like burnt, and you wouldn’t want that to greet you in your morning dose.

4. Your Tap Water Is Sabotaging Your Brew

While this is beyond a customer’s control, tap water minerals and impurities actually ruin the taste of your coffee. Just a simple filter can dramatically improve the flavor and consistency. It’s a simple fact that your beans deserve better than chlorinated water. It’s a good thing that most coffee shops have filtered systems.

3. Drip Coffee Is the Unsung Caffeine Hero

In need of an extra dose? A 12-ounce drip coffee might save you money compared to that espresso shot, which costs more. Why? It has equal or more caffeine than they do. If you’re opting for serious energy, skip the fancy drinks and opt for a simple black coffee. It’s actually an acquired taste for some, but hey, it’s the real MVP if you’re going for energy.

2. Your Daily Cup Could Be Hiding Mold

As scary as it sounds, your coffee might hide a mold that you unconsciously sip on. Coffee is a heavily chemically treated drink, so it’s prone to mold and mycotoxins. The problem is that your barista won’t even know it at all. The simple solution is to look for an organic brand to ensure that your daily cup isn’t toxic.

1. Decaf Isn’t a Sham

Don’t worry, decaf isn’t a sham at all, as it contains 3% caffeine. They’re created with modern processes to get the sweet and flavorful coffee. Don’t be afraid to opt for it if you’re a coffee drinker who easily gets the jitters or has problems with sleep disruption. They’re made just for you.
